Are you looking for answers as to why you feel the way you do?

Gratitude is much more than a fleeting feeling—it’s a transformative practice that can help us lead more joyful, fulfilling, and healthier lives. When we make gratitude a daily ritual, it shifts our entire perspective, setting us up to notice more good around us, lowering our stress, and even making sleep more restorative. Let’s explore why gratitude is so impactful, including how to start a simple gratitude practice that works like a ripple effect in your life.

The Reticular Activating System: Your Mind’s Bodyguard

Ever wonder why some people seem naturally positive, while others are always waiting for the next problem? This often comes down to the brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS acts like a bodyguard for our minds, filtering in the information it believes is important and letting the rest slip into the background. You know when you buy a new car, and prior to buying it, you never notice that type of car on the road and then once you buy it, you notice that same car everywhere? This is the work of the RAS! It definitely happened to me when I purchased my last car, I never noticed Subarus prior to buying my Subaru! Likewise, if we’re always focused on stress or worry, our RAS will scan the world for signs of danger. But if we focus on gratitude, the RAS reprograms to look for the positive around us. This is why a consistent gratitude practice, like keeping a gratitude journal, actually rewires our brains to notice more to appreciate each day.

When we train our minds to see the good, we’re no longer stuck in survival mode, constantly on the lookout for potential threats. Instead, we’re living in a place of appreciation, noticing more and more things to be grateful for. This shift doesn’t just happen overnight, but it’s deeply powerful over time.

Bedtime Gratitude Journaling: A Simple Step with Profound Benefits

Keeping a gratitude journal is an easy but transformative bedtime ritual. Just by writing down three things you’re grateful for before bed, you’re setting yourself up for a night of positive, peaceful rest. When we give our unconscious mind these uplifting thoughts, it has good material to work on as we sleep. It’s a wonderful alternative to going to bed with worries or after a stressful news binge or violent movie.

If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, reviewing your gratitude entries can help calm your mind. It redirects your focus away from stress and back to the positives in your life, helping you fall back asleep more easily.

Start Small, Reap Big Rewards

Beginning a gratitude practice doesn’t have to be complicated. Just start small by writing down three things you’re grateful for each night and feel into the pleasure that comes with focusing on your gratitude. Here’s an example of a recent entry I made:

– Grateful for an easy drive to Vancouver and back with no hiccups on the highway.

– Grateful we finished our Girl Guide training an hour early, so I could get home while it was still light.

– Grateful to Aaron at VPO Squamish for fixing my broken tent pole, free of charge!

My Journey with Gratitude

I started my gratitude journal eight years ago, and at first, it was just a nice way to end the day. It felt good to focus on the positive things in my life before going to sleep. After about a year, I was at a conference luncheon where someone asked, “What is one thing you’ve done this year that has changed your life?” My first thought was, Wow, that’s a big question! But then it hit me: my gratitude journal. I realized how much lighter and happier I’d felt, almost like I was walking on air. Life felt easier, more joyful, and I knew it was because my focus had shifted.

Now, gratitude is a cornerstone in all our trainings at Amplify Impact Academy https://amplifyimpactacademy.com/90-day-training. We encourage all our students to implement this practice because it’s that powerful.

What Are You Grateful for Today?

Take a moment to reflect: What are you grateful for today? When you make gratitude a habit, the benefits only multiply, transforming your life and inviting more happiness, ease, and resilience. Give it a try, one day at a time, and see where gratitude takes you. If you want to dive into this more, check out the book “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne.
