Girls Matter is a non-profit organization that I co-founded back in January 2017 to stop teenage marriages by keeping girls in school, giving them a chance at a better future, and breaking the poverty cycle, 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time. Girls Matter also responds to the needs of the communities we work in, not by creating our own projects, but by addressing their specific requests. Recently, our staff in Buyaya, Uganda, reached out with a critical need: our girls desperately required clothing that wasn’t stained, tattered, and torn.
- Collecting second-hand clothes would be easy.
- Shipping them over would be astronomical in cost.
- Customs officers would likely intercept the clothes and sell them, pocketing the money. Such is the way of life there.
So, we had to get creative!
We decided to send funds to Evelyn, a recent graduate from seamstress school who had received a loan from us to buy a sewing machine. With these funds, she could purchase fabrics and sew new dresses for the girls, earning an income in the process. This idea has numerous benefits:

We are incredibly proud of the work we do in Uganda and Kenya, always striving to meet the needs of the communities we support. This project, while unplanned for 2024, highlighted a pressing need. We also have upcoming school fees and aim to continue our menstrual supplies program.
