Having just attended my youngest daughter’s University graduation last week, it has left me thinking about how University is so much more than just academics, and yet with the wisdom of my 50+ years, I also now see what our education system misses. University is undoubtedly a transformative period in our lives, often seen as the bridge between adolescence and adulthood. While the academic coursework is pivotal, providing specialized knowledge in various fields, the university experience encompasses so much more than just the subjects we study. It is a time when we begin to develop essential life skills, take responsibility for our health and well-being, and learn to navigate the complexities of independent living.

Developing Life Skills

Living away from home for the first time, university students learn to cook, clean, and manage their finances. These tasks, though seemingly mundane, are crucial for fostering a sense of responsibility and independence. Moreover, the university environment encourages students to advocate for themselves, whether it’s negotiating with roommates, seeking help from professors, or accessing campus resources.

Building Lifelong Friendships

University is also a time for building lifelong friendships. The bonds formed during these years often stem from shared experiences, both academic and personal. These relationships are invaluable, providing support, companionship, and a network that extends beyond graduation.

Transitioning to Adult Independence

The transition from teen dependency to adult independence is a significant part of the university experience. And Yet There Is Very Little Education About Our Unconscious Mind

Despite the extensive learning that takes place during our formative years, there is one crucial area that is often overlooked in traditional education: the power of our unconscious mind. We are rarely introduced to the idea that our thoughts significantly impact our emotions and behaviors, which in turn shape the results we achieve in life.

While I value my academic education, I can’t help but wonder how different my life might have been if I had been exposed to these concepts in my teens or twenties instead of my fifties.

While it’s never too late to learn, having this knowledge earlier could make navigating life’s challenges much easier and more fulfilling.
